The Astronomy Dome
Dominican College first year students had the use of a mobile planetarium for the day on Tuesday 20th February, to explore science, astronomy, geology and geography in a fun and interactive way. The exploration dome uses state-of-the-art full dome 360 degree 3-D digital projection technology, excellent graphics and advanced computer simulations to bring Earth and Space to the students. As well as a talk from the experts, students vieweda short film, “Two small pieces of glass”, about the history and science of telescopes, who invented the telescope, how have astronomers employed these astounding instruments to unravel the Universe’s deepest secrets. Constellations, the doppler effect and the big bang theory were also introduced. This is particularly useful for the new junior cycle syllabus.
