German Scholarship Winner
It was late March, a week or two before the Easter break, when the Principal, Dr. Laffoy, made an announcement on the intercom. I was in class, not paying much attention to what she was saying, until I heard her say my name: “I would like to congratulate Julian Burke and Rosa Lorenz for receiving over 97% in their JC German exam. They will now attend an interview in the hope of winning a scholarship to Germany for 3 weeks”. I couldn’t believe what I had heard: I froze with the shock. I had thought that I had done well in the exam but definitely not that well.
The interview was on the Monday after the Easter break, so I didn’t have too much time to prepare. There were 5 other students being interviewed also and 3 German interviewers. I was terrified. I thought for a second that I had forgotten all the German I had learned in the last 4 years. After I had started though, I was okay. I didn’t think that I had gotten the scholarship.
I thought everyone else was so much better than me and that they must have won the scholarship. That’s why I nearly cried in the classroom when my German teacher announced 2 days later that I had won. I was having a really bad day and this was just the thing I needed to cheer me up.
This was the last thing I expected to happen this year. I had absolutely no idea that it was going to happen. This was a really big milestone for me because it validated for me that I actually am good at German because I never really thought that I was that good.
I have learned from this experience not to underestimate my abilities and to believe in myself. (Julian Burke TY)
