'Frizzy', reviewed by Niamh K.
'Frizzy' is a graphic novel (comic-book style) by Claribel A. Ortega, a woman living in New York. 'Frizzy's' plot is simple and enjoyable, and is a fun light read for anyone who wants to pass the time. The story's plot follows a girl called Marlene, a 10-14 year-old girl (the book doesn't specify her age). She has beautiful curly hair inherited from the black side of her family. She is Afro-Latina and wants to keep her hair curly, but her mother has been dragging her to the salon every Sunday to keep her hair 'nice' and 'professional' in her mother's words. Marlene hates this, and described feeling sad and unhappy. However, her mother won't relent and always drags her there despite her protests.
With help from her Tia (auntie) Ruby and her supportive best friend Camilla, Marlene helps herself and her Mom realise that curly hair is beautiful and learns how to wear it proudly. Frizzy is a brilliant book about accepting yourself, not fitting in, and being honest with the people you love.
