Off to Winning Ways

24-September-24

Congratulations to both the U16 and U19 Basketball Teams who kicked off the new season with home victories over Loreto Stephen’s Green last Friday.

U16 game started off slow with both teams exchanging baskets at either end of the court. The score at the end of the first quarter saw the home team down by 1 point. The teams tempo picked up into the 2nd quarter with scores from Orlaith Bruton and Isabelle Lavin. Great defensive efforts from Áine Butler and Caoilfhionn Glynn kept the Dominican side in the game. Second half saw DCGA’s Lily Hyland up the intensity and with multiple fast break attacks putting her side into the lead. Once again the impressive defensive show by the girls in black held Loreto to just 2 points in the third quarter. 4th quarter saw Dominican College take home the win with a score of 37 - 30.

Last season when these two teams met only one basket after overtime saw DCGA take the win. U19 team battled hard in the opening half. Áine Clinton and Udo Uzor dynamic duo under the basket saw DCGA secure precise points moving into the break. With DCGA in some foul trouble, Orlaith Bruton and Rebecca Heaney stepped up knocking down baskets for their team. 3rd quarter saw DCGA defence step it up, led by Mary-Kate Spellman with her teammates following. The defensive pressures and fast breaks from DCGA held Loreto Stephen’s Green to minimal points in the final quarter. U19 team followed suit with a 30 - 24 win.
