Transition Year students kicked off their new Dominican College school year with an exciting trip to Achill Island from Monday, August 26th to Wednesday, August 28th. The 137 students departed from Griffith Avenue with an early start at 8 a.m. sharp on Monday morning, brimming with energy and anticipation. Over the next three days, students and teachers experienced the full spectrum of Irish weather, from warm sunny spells to lashing rain, adding an extra layer of adventure to every activity.
Despite the varying conditions, the students embraced every opportunity. They took to the waves for surfing, where some rode their first waves, while others perfected their skills. Kayaking along the lake proved thrilling as students paddled through clear waters one moment and braved choppy waves the next. The more adventurous opted for pier jumping in the evening, cheering each other on as they leapt into the Atlantic. Hiking through Achill’s rugged terrain offered breathtaking views, reinforcing the spirit of exploration.
Beyond the physical activities, the trip was a wonderful opportunity for students to form new friendships. As they navigated the challenges together, laughter and camaraderie grew, making it a memorable bonding experience. By the time they returned to Griffith Avenue at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, everyone agreed it was a fantastic start to the Transition Year programme. The Achill trip not only introduced students to thrilling outdoor pursuits but also laid the foundation for a positive and connected year ahead.
