Over the summer, Dominican College achieved the incredible achievement of winning the Google Reference Secondary School of the Year award for the UK & Ireland.

This incredible accomplishment was a very hard task as we competed against Google Reference Schools across the whole of the UK and Ireland. Dominican College accepted this award at an awards show in Google’s London HQ on the 28th of June. Our two amazing digital leaders, Ms McCool and Mr Curry accepted this honour and attended the ceremony in London. This is a triumph that took many years of hard work from our whole Digital Learning Team and the school could not be more proud.

To end Respect and Connect week the entire school gathered on the pitch to celebrate our Google Award. With huge effort from Mr Hurley, Mr Curry, The TY’s and faculty, we managed to pull off recreating the Google logo with coloured paper. With six year groups and six letters in “Google” - each year group represented a coloured letter - a wonderful opportunity for the whole school to get involved. There was a great buzz of excitement with the drone flying overhead and recording. The day ended with a school conga line which everyone took part in. We are very proud of the video and the hard work which was put into it by Mr Hurley and his multimedia class. To add to this excitement we were privileged to have the video close the Back to School with Google seminar in the Dublin headquarters, which the Digital Learning Team attended.

On Thursday the 3rd November, Dominican College welcomed a very special guest, Anna Artemyeva, the Google Head of Education for UK, Ireland, Italy, DACH & Central Asia. Anna visited us to present our Google Reference School of the Year award in front of all students and staff and to take a tour of our wonderful school. We were so lucky to have such an important guest visit us and to be able to show-off our award-winning school to her.

Anna’s tour started off with meeting our Student Digital Learning Team at the front entrance before making her way around to many different classes. Anna toured a number of classes to gain feedback and see how we use all aspects of Google’s applications. After talking to our students, the school gathered in the gym for the presentation of the award and for Anna to view our Respect and Connect week activity from the previous Friday. Anna said a few words and congratulated us on our achievement and thanked us for welcoming her into our school. After the assembly we took a Digital Learning Team photo with Anna and our award and the team headed up to the boardroom. The Student Digital Learning Team then had the opportunity to talk with Anna and give any feedback or suggestions we may have had. This was an amazing opportunity and we discussed all aspects of Digital Learning that takes place in the school. It was great to be able to discuss our experiences with a professional who was taking each part of our feedback into consideration.

We are so lucky to have had this opportunity of welcoming Anna into our school and for the accomplishment of winning the Google Reference School of the Year award 2024.
